Hormone Therapy for Women

The North American Menopause Association suggests that hormone replacement treatments (HRTs) in pre-menopausal women can reduce the symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, sleep disturbances, night sweats, bone loss, and vaginal dryness. Traditional therapies have relied on natural hormone therapies using material from animals such as horses. There are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans and synthetic or horse preparations.

Within the last 20 years, options for women seeking hormone replacement therapy grew with the development of bioidentical hormones. This hormone therapy can include a variety of natural and or/plant-based hormone replacements that are chemically identical to hormones produced by the body.  Compounded bioidentical hormone therapy (CBHRT) puts the various elements together in combinations specifically designed by a healthcare provider for each patient.

Our compounding pharmacists work with patients and practitioners to provide customized hormone therapy with the needed hormones in the most appropriate strength and dosage form to meet each woman’s specific needs. Hormone therapy should be initiated carefully after a woman’s medical and family history has been reviewed. Every woman is unique and will respond to therapy in her own way. Close monitoring and adjustments are essential.

Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP) Syndrome
The Mayo Clinic defines CPP as pain below the belly button, between the hips that lasts six months or longer.  The pain associated with CPP can be constant or intermittent and ranges from a dull ache to sharp pains or cramping.  Symptoms can occur at any time but may be more prevalent during sexual intercourse while going to the bathroom,  or after sitting for extended periods of time.

CPP is considered complex to treat because there are a variety of underlying causes for it. These conditions include:

  •  Endometriosis, conditions impacting bones, joints, or connective tissue (musculoskeletal),
  • Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Pelvic congestion syndrome or
  • Psychological factors

Sexual Dysfunction

The causes of sexual dysfunction can be varied.  The result of these issues can include low libido/reduced sexual desire, vaginal dryness or irritation, arousal difficulties including orgasm difficulties, pain during sex or stress. As many as 40% of women suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction.

Compounded medications prescribed by a healthcare physician and formulated by Health Dimensions Clinical Pharmacy can provide a higher potential for a successful treatment outcome.
